Balancing Dynamic Supply and Demand in Green Buildings: Intelligent Adaptation for Human-centric Building Envelope Design

Description

This project aims to develop an intelligent adaptation model for building envelope design that balances supply and demand across sustainability objectives using a multimodal control strategy. It will focus on: (1) the dynamic demands of human activity on energy use, carbon emissions, mental stress and operation cost in residential and commercial buildings; (2) the multi-objective supply of adaptive building envelopes for energy efficiency, carbon sequestration, mental restoration, economic productivity and implementation cost; and (3) optimizing envelope design to achieve supply-demand balance with multimodal control systems. Our preliminary studies with IoT-enabled climate-adaptive systems show potential for improving energy efficiency and occupant comfort. This research will improve and validate the system in Suzhou, China, delivering a customizable low-impact envelope design tool and a prototype integrating solar PV technology.
